Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative side when she was a young girl because of her Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread social activism. In the same way, her mother was socially aware and taught her to say something through the arts. While DuVernay grew up within Compton with her family, she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at college. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash in the house that belonged to a member on the jury. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was hired right after graduating from college as an intern at an unassuming studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations.
